You've never seen a player more technically sound at the basics than Antonio Valencia?

Really?

Valencia is an odd one in that regard. His first touch and first time passing are at a very high level, but there is a complete lack of imagination or flair in his game. Technical mastery of the basics should theoretically give you the confidence to play a more expansive game, not Tony though.

the way he receives the ball under pressure, almost always away from where the opponent can get at it, is what allows him to keep it simple. same with all technically great players.

imagination, vision and tactical creativity are a different thing.

Mike Duxbury was a confident right back, when they defended without being wing backs .

Not putting him above G Nev, but he was better than Valencia as a defender.

As was John Gidman, although he was past his best when he arrived at OT, but at least he helped city to relegation after leaving us for them.

Watching him wriggling around to get back onto his right is one of the most painful sights in football.

That said I've grown to admire the way he's reinvented himself, and even his fiercest crtitics would never suggest he gives less than everything for the cause.

The 3 you named were better right back than Valencia ,did you know that Gidman was blind in 1 eye and should never have passed the medical ,but Atkinson knew of problem and they got around it with some scam . that was in a documentry on Utd tv channel , he was a very good quality player way passed his best when we got him but he still improved the team.

He didn't seem a bad fella. It was that bit where he was at the Cliff reminiscing. Seemed a bit like a man who the world had left behind.

Yeah, spose most of them go a bit that way. Middle aged, looking back on halcyon days.

Enjoyed the doco.

players from the olden days are fundamentally inferior, there isn't a player pre 1985 who would get in our side now

we will all end up like that ,thinking about the great times you had ,and how the world is going backwards , it's all high tech today ,i feel really sorry for anybody born after the 80's . hardly see any kids playing football or riding bikes in my area , many people can't manage unless they got mobile phone in hand ,when we face the facts it's a sad world compared to 40+ yrs ago. the younger generation doe's not know the difference and just think the older ones are dinosaurs ,but they never knew the great times of 60's till end 80's in all aspects of life.

Bang average player who has become massively overrated to the point of being presented as some sort of purists choice by pseuds all because of him being willing to play right back when we didn't really have anyone,

A piece of play that sums him up perfectly happened during Sunday, approaching the halfway line with Lukaku crying out for an straightforward pass down the wing to let him run at a wobbling West Ham, Valencia backheeled it and turned back towards his own goal. it annoyed the living bejesus out of me.

He's not nearly our best right back, he's a percentage playing shithouse who's made the right back spot his own by being adequate going forward and back and having his positional errors blamed on less popular centre halves.

Probably one of the most ridiculous statements ever made on the Internet. Congratulations.

Imagine thinking the likes of Pele, Garrincha, Cruyff, Neeskens, Di Stefano, Puskas, Beckenbauer, Charlton and Rivera wouldn't get into a United side that finished sixth in a piss-poor league.

Smalling better than Gentile? Fellaini better than Gerson?
