Default Cry Me A River (Plate)

River living up to their gallinas nickname, couldn't handle a bit of pepper spray, refused to carry on playing:

"Gallinas" means hens. Similar to in English, a chicken is considered a symbol of cowardice in Argentina. River Plate have acquired the nickname of "las gallinas" due to some Arsenal-esque bottle job performances. Not having access to videos on this tablet I'm guessing by the context that it portrays something similar.

It's not just pepper spray. Appears the £#%&!ing idiot put acid from a flare into a spray bottle full of pepper spray, cut through the chain link fence with a torch, then through the inflatable tunnel, and sprayed 4 players full on in the face. All 4 spent the night in a burn unit (Kranevitter, Funes Mori, Ponzio, Driussi).

The match will probably stand as abandoned, which will mean River advance (having won the first leg). It'll also mean a GIGANTIC punishment for Boca - first rumor is playing behind closed doors in all international comps for two years.

That would be the Libertadores River just knocked Boca out of (or are about to). I'll bump this when they win it next month.

Game awarded to River 3-0 on a walkover, they win the tie 4-0 on aggregate. River were up 1-0 (aggregate) at the time of the suspension.

Boca banned from international competition for one year, will play behind closed doors for two years after that.

The Boca fan responsible was in the middle of a 45-day stadium ban.

Boca defender Daniel Diaz: "The logical thing to do was play on."

Yeah after 4 of the opposition's first 11 were sent to a burn unit. Perfectly logical.

Could get worse for Boca as more comes out, and if they're stupid enough to appeal, which they are.

So no competition ban or stadium closure. Probably just focus on extending the lead at the top of the table

Pathetic. "Kicked out" of a competition they were 45 minutes from exiting anyway, and a 200K fine. Barely any penalty at all - in fact it spared them the indignity of getting the boot from their greatest rivals again, just as in the Copa Sudamericana last autumn. :shakehead:
