No idea pal. Should really take a leaf out of my book and think before they speak/post.

Amazed this transfer has happened, fair play to whoever got it through, they've done their job so far this window. Hopefully that's not the end of it.

Also, looking forward to Chelsea signing Haaland and seeing all the articles talking about how he's had it easy in the Bundesliga, but we'll really see what he's made of coming up against the likes of Grant Hanley.

Great signing.

The club are really backing their manager.

No more excuses now. Time to deliver.

Not a chance he'll get two seasons without winning anything of importance.

Hopefully we'll not need to find out. But he has built the core of the one of the most incredibly gifted, young and attacking squads, I've ever know us to have. Only seems right that he sticks around and oversees years of success with them.

This is pretty huge. It's stating the obvious but it's can't be underestimated just how important it is to have a good defence if you want to be successful. Our forwards will do their thing (and we have added to them), if we stop the silly goals we will keep progressing. Not only that a strong defence will just make the team better as a whole.

All reports suggest Ole will go for one holding midfielder this season especially with a quick centre back so we will have more options going forward.

Agreed, but I’m not convinced one less defensive midfielder is the way forward. It doesn’t matter how good the back line is, we can’t have midfields just striding from their half and finding themselves 30 yards from goal with ease.

We don’t need less, we need better.

he's played one holding midfielder, at best, rather a lot. hardly a change. pogba as one of a two-man midfield doesn't fool anyone.

Yes, and when he does, it tends to leave us horribly exposed, which is why he reverted to two men doing one job in McFred so often.

One of our biggest problems is the consistency of those two on the ball. They can do ok at times, but generally their passing is limited and they concede possession under pressure in dangerous areas. They also struggle with any kind of difficult ball into the forwards. Two and three touches, all the time. It puts us under so much pressure and kills so much momentum going forward. Opposition become wise to it too. Fred, receiving the ball from the defenders under an aggressive press is disaster waiting to happen.

Their work rate, their energy is good. They’re tenacious, but we need someone better on the ball that won’t land us in trouble in our own half and can play up to the forwards early.

Pogba is played there to do that because, on paper, he has the attributes. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a brain and can’t ‘read a room’ to save his life.

I would like to see VDB there. He’s one of the most comfortable players on the ball and reads the game well. Ole clearly doesn’t fancy him there though, so be it.

Having said that and pulling it back on topic, panic stations at the back for spells in games was another crippling problem for us last season. Varane will bring some much needed assurance and composure. His quality should elevate those around him.

Ole has been very good at simply addressing key problems with clear upgrades in quality. If Varane can have an impact on the defence that
Bruno did on the creativity, then we’ll be significantly better.

all true and, obvs, fred isn't good enough - too lightweight for a start. however, what would also help massively (as mentioned many times before) is our back four not £#%&!ing passing to the midfield with their backs to a press. all four of our defenders should be confident enough on the ball to wander upfield the way they are facing and then give the ball to someone in space or facing goal. playing the ball to fred (or anyone) in front of our penalty area with a pack of wolves around him is just asking for trouble.

Hopefully, yes. Maguire is becoming a lot more positive in carrying the ball out. Lindelof is ok at it and can ping the occasional ball over the top for Rashford quite well, but Varane should be an upgrade in that department.

Sky write up on him. Some interesting comments from Ole at the end regarding our weakness from set pieces:

The arrival of the 6ft 3in Varane, though, will mean goals like Villarreal's headed winner from a set-piece in last season's Europa League final should now hopefully be a thing of the past at United.
