Was playing in the MLS until this season. Hibs signed him in March of this year and released him after one appearance.

Could do a job, etc.

Except for that strange season in 2002/03, when he was genuinely good.

What happened - then and subsequently?

I'm completely serious, he looked like the real deal that season. As I am sure other Fredsters will confirm.

Unfortunately this is many people's only memory of him:

john o'shea was a far superior player to butt. he wasn't a great player and he had plenty of deficits he held midfield with giggs when push came to shove.

he was better than smalling, jones, that argentinian fool. and most of everything that followed the greats rio/vidic/stam/bruce/pally.

Lost his nerve for some reason. One of the few United players I've seen (until the last few years) who didn't ever want the ball.

Was definitely on the radar but supposed to be a year later, he was still only 17 but Everton were getting offers (Newcastle ffs ) so we had to act

That, and the one at Anfield.

Armers had a whoopsie here, though. Apart from it being as pointless as comparing Cantona and Irwin, Butty was sound. Found himself up against Ince and Keane but always put a shift in. Did everything this shower of @#%&!s don’t do.
