Thought so at the time but the article suggests money?
Fergie just not fancying Stam for the role anymore?

Maybe Fergie just saw signs of decline setting in and sold him at the right time, with the nandrolone news only surfacing later on.

I think Fergie strongly suspected about the doping. How much of a factor that was is open to debate.

Never bought into the Fergie knew stuff. Stam got risned a couple times esrrly that season compounded with him revealing he was tapped when tapping was still a massive deal and SAF just decided he had to go. It was a huge error looking back.

Remember Saha giving him problems, think he only played the charity shield other than that.

Always thought we should have got Stam a top class partner after the treble, and he ended up leaving before one arrived

Stam and Rio would have been a great partnership........The Larry White signing was bizarre, an aging snail at the tail end of his career that was totally wrong for the league we play in..........

Fergie had a bit of a weakness for taking on players he couldn't have at their peak.

Blanc, Larsson, Goram.

I think Fergie had a lot of trust in J'oS and Brown. The hope was that Blanc would come in and help them.

Goram was emergency cover because we had injuries.

The Larsson one was bizzare. We didn't need him and he didn't deserve a place in the squad. I know Saha was struggling with injuries but we should have given Rossi a chance instead.

he nearly destroyed them, he was £#%&!ing hopeless, towards the end of his second season with us he was dropped to the bench... He did so much for them both that both poor bastards ended up playing out their careers in Sunderland.......

Still won a league medal though

I think letting Stam go was a mistake, Fergie has said so himself iirc. But blanc was a decent signing that could offer leadership to a young-ish back four and was a decent short term fix.

Also would we have gone for Ferdinand if we’d have kept Stam?

Rio credits him with helping him make it at the top level so it wasn't a complete waste of time.

I remember being certain that Wes would make it as a first choice centre back. Maybe he would have if it wasn't for the injuries. Jo'S was always going to be a squad player.

I didn’t mind the Larson signing either tbh.

An experienced forward who’d won it all to rotate with a group of young forwards.

Though the latter two only played a handful of games - Goram playing twice as many, of course.
