you saying that maybe he did fully intend to sack him but has changed his mind is exactly that. it's also pretty much what murphy now says.

fwiw i'm far from mata's biggest fan any more than i was berbatov's. but quality is quality and these are the players I pay to go and see - especially when the team isn't exactly packed with the stuff in certain other positions.
I'm not saying it's what happened or even that it's more likely. Just that it's entirely possible. That's often how football goes.

The early problems with Mhkitaryan would also be a factor in any decision.

the most likely scenario by far is that mourinho intended to get his feet under the table, have a look at everyone, and take it from there.

the most likely scenario by far, given what's happened, is that his early focus would have been on how soon he could get away with phasing rooney out.

I think Mourinho often goes in knowing full well what he wants to do. I remember when he returned to Chelsea in early May or whatever it was, the talk of Mata being moved on started pretty much immediately. Which at the time was a big shock, of course.

I remember there was that early talk that Mata and Blind were players he wasn't keen on. But ultimately we don't know.

I think the 'early talk' stemmed from nothing more than 2+2=5 laziness.

He must want to sell Mata because he's sold him before.

He won't like Blind because he likes specialists.

at the end of the day what we know is that oscar was abromovich's plaything, chelsea signed fabregas, mourinho has phased rooney out and only 5 players have started more games for him than mata this season - 3 of them being zlatan, pogba and the keeper. we also know that this trend began from week 1 of the season.

When Mourinho sold him at Chelsea there were two conditions which don't apply now

a) they still had an embarrassment of talent without him

and b) some gullible sods offered 37 million pounds for him

said as much at the time. Lazy train of thought from those expecting Mata to be shifted.

Possibly so. We'll never know the answer to these things.

Tbh Mourinho would have needed a heart of stone to bomb the poor lad out again

From beeb gossip

Daley Blind, 26, is set to be part of a summer clearout at Manchester United, with manager Jose Mourinho weighing up Benfica's 22-year-old centre back Victor Lindelof as a possible replacement. (Sun)

Not really. One is based on speculation and the other is based on what's actually happened. They're not equally as likely.
