Not sure how changing the formation would've made any difference to either unless we had some players with the energy to match them, which we didn't/haven't. In fact, you can point to most of our defeats and say the same thing about the difference in energy.
no, not at all.

the pitch was the same for both teams.

as for our energy levels, we have struggled after European games, but we have also struggled to field anything like a 1st choice defence in most of our defeats. neither of these 'excuses' could be used in Munich.

The pitch is the same for both teams, that is true, but it does depend what you are trying to do on said pitch. United were trying to play composed, passing football in the face of aggressive pressing. Munich were trying to move forward as quickly and directly as possible and had no real pressing to face, as our players lacked the mobility and energy to do it. Therefore the pitch was less of an issue to Munich.

True, but not many are as bad as that was, maybe Wembley. That pitch cost us our most important forward player. It was a joke.

From that it reads almost as though you are saying we should've just ran at them with the ball instead of passing it? That is what worked for Bayern though, so I suppose you may have a point.

However you look at it, the pitch wasn't conducive to an attractive passing game, it was ridiculously firm and uneven. Not an excuse by any means, you have to play on the pitch provided and we didn't, but a fair reason for the failure of our possession football. The excuse is that we had no plan b, and no players to change the style of play.

I did ask what you would've done to change the game after you intimated that Fergies steadfast refusal to ditch the 4-5-1 is what caused our exit from the CL and defeat to Chelsea. I haven't seen your response anywhere?

my response is all over the board, namely play Berbatov to give Rooney the support he clearly desperately needed. the pitch didn't cost us Rooney ffs. the tactics cost us Rooney. he was injured in mid-Feb was it? and was still being flogged to £#%&!ing death on April 7th.

True, but as the only options to support him is the lacklustre and largely ineffective Berbatov and an 18 year old kid who has played about 6 games all season and none since November, we are kind of hamstrung. It's hardly worth weakening an already struggling midfield for either of those options tbh.

He went over on his ankle, no doubt due to one of the divots or ditches in the pitch.

Wembley co cost us Owen, Munich cost us Rooney.

yes, i've gathered that you don't agree with me

amazing how many players limped out of that Munich game tbh

and who'd have ever expected owen to pull his hamstring?

actually, didn't Ferguson say after that match that he had been worried that Owen might not be up to playing on that £#%&!ing pitch

Ask Fergie why he thought it a wise move to pay Spurs near on £50 million for that slack jawed @#%&! Carrick & the worlds most over rated player Berbatov, whilst you at it ask him why he also spalshed another £20 million on a cripple like Hargreaves then complain there is no value in the market

Best snaps here on a Polish website for some reason:

Anyway, mans had a gittering evening sat next to Paul Merson and Alan Curbishley. Quite.

Seven signed framed pictures of seven great United number 7's - Best, Coppell, Robson, Becks, Eric, Christiano and er...Owen - went for £55k.
