Phil Jones
Amongst all the gnashing and wailing about the powder puff midfield two of scholes/cleverly and cleverly/anderson isn't it a big £#%&!ing obvious that Jones could quite easily play in the two as the physical partner alongside either cleverly or carrick.
He looked exposed in a 4 because of his limited passing and positional sense but would have been ideal to mark Fellaini or track Dembele and just either pass forward to one of the 3 or the other one. Would also give us a third option at set pieces. Didn't see Dembele as the answer - the last thing we need is another player charging up field leaving Carrick or Scholes as the last line. We have so much attacking talent we need someone who shields the centre of defence. |

Everyone in the know (Jamie Redknapp, Alan Shearer, Robbie Savage) seems to think he'll be a world class centre back eventually.
But i'd be happy with giving him a run as a defensive midfielder. Right back didnt really suit him and we're well served at centre half when everyone's fit. I know we havent had everyone fit since the 1929/30 season. |
