I expect a good manager to get the best out of average players, the best out of the best players, sign better players and sell the players who aren't good enough or don't fit in. Players need to take personal responsibility too, ofcourse, and I've made that point recently 're Rashford. But if all of them are underachieving, if a whole team looks bereft of life, you look above. I don't think Lingard is good enough to be a starting regular for United. I think he has some quality though in a system that suits his style. This system isn't it. Jose Mourinho has also kept him over 5 transfer windows and plays him ahead of other options. This applies to a lot of them. |

[quote=utd99;5047833]Given the insane inflation rate football has seen over the past decade or so, using monetary comparisons is irrelevant. For the majority of his tenure, Fergie could have bought the five best players in England for what we spent on Pogba alone. Fergie brought in a lot of players in his first four years.
Their was a time in the 90's when we were winning league titles that we were being out spent by Man City, Newcastle, Blackburn, |

The whole way we go about hiring managers and where we want to go as football club is a bigger issue than Matteo Darmian, for example. |

We have average players. But then so does every team in this entire league aside from City who have assembled a billion quid squad.
Fergie worked with average players - didn't stop him making the whole greater than the sum of it's parts. Look at Klopp ffs. Just look at Liverpool's defence. Aside from Van Dijk who the £#%&! would recognise any of them if you walked past them in the street? Alexander-Arnold? Robertson? Probably cost less than a month of Sanchez's wages. But they have the joint best defence in the league. Why? Because the manager is playing a way to get the best of what he's got. Ours cannot. The fact is because the team doesn't function properly as a unit, we're looking for players to produce moments of individual quality to win matches and this squad isn't big on that. The mindset of the team is totally and utterly wrong. Mourinho wants to set teams up to win games on fine margins, to take advantage of moments in games and then remain stoic and solid to see the game out. This team doesn't have that in it. It's not experienced enough, it's not good enough and more importantly it doesn't enjoy playing like that. Not many teams do these days. |

The negative defeatist setup is an insult. It's an insult to the supporters, can only imagine it's worse for the players. I know, they should "man up" and all but it's not that £#%&!ing simple is it. |

City's defence isnt super human, it's just that they play in a way so as to make sure they aren't having to defend a lot. Same as Liverpool. On the front foot, all the time, every game. Have over 60% of the ball every single game and dominate the other team in their own half. We on the other hand have a shaky as £#%&! defence which we seem to enjoy leaving utterly exposed. It took until the 70th minute today for a player to put a proper tackle on a Palace player - and it was rashford of all people. Until then, Palace had the freedom of old trafford every time they had the ball, they could bring it forward, get it to Zaha's feet every time he had loads of space. We have no interest in getting the ball back or being on the front foot. We retreat and surrender space to the opposition in an attempt to maintain team shape. It doesn't work. |

when all is said and done, the manager needs to go, he is not getting the best out of the players, their is no plan or forward planning put in place, it is a shambles from top to bottom but the buck stops with the manager regarding the football and it philosophy.. So £#%&! him off immediately and get some £#%&!er who wants to play football... The £#%&!er is more interested in gaining browny points in taking pot shots at players and bigging himself up instead of doing what he is paid to do........
