Not so sure. When Fergie was still in charge we used to struggle in so called easy groups. I think we play better when we know we have to fight for it.

It was often dependent on our performance the season before imo. Seasons we did well and went far we could back up with complacent group campaigns. Seasons where we bombed hard we often came back and nigh on obliterated the group following year.

Saw that too.

I hate that overrated, gobby brick-headed £#%&!er.

You're making YOUR history. Which is £#%&!ing non-existent so it's not exactly hard.

Hope he dies of dandruff.

the only way we dont get cl football scenario .. if we finish 4th and city and liverpool both win the european trophies and both finish out of top4 ... we then get europa league ..cl can have 5 clubs representing there country it changed a couple of years ago .. spain had 5 this season when seville won the europa cup but finished out of top 4 .. so as long as we get top 4 and the other 2 dont win the cups we stay in cl

The reason we won't get CL football is because we won't finish in the top four.

The performance of Wolfsburg and PSV makes it more frustrating that we botched the group. Fine margins at the top, with a little more ambition away to CSKA after getting back to 1-1 or LVG not losing his nerve in the home match against PSV and it could be Utd in a QF of the CL.

Watching these matches gives more ammunition to the idea that we are in a weak era of European club football, the competition badly needs a more competitive Serie A and for the top clubs in England to pick up.

Draxler was quality again last night, apparently he has only really turned it on in Europe this season, but he is a lovely player to watch.

LvG did not 'lose his nerve' against PSV at OT, the players hit the £#%&!ing wall and we're playing as though knee deep in treacle for the last 20 minutes.

Really? we started with Depay, Martial, Rooney and Lingard in our attack, for the first time in months we looked fluid and dangerous. It was not quite clicking but there was plenty of promise. 5 mins into the second half he changes it, sends on Fellaini and Mata, ruined everything that was good about our play in that game up to that point and we probably should have lost the game in the end.

That was one of the first signs of LVG realizing that he needed more pace and mobility across the attack, rather than the static, sideways passing tedium that we had to suffer through.

Edit: Just checked, it was Fellaini and Young who came on, 13 mins into the second half, Mata did not appear until the last 5, memory

That was because the players on the pitch were £#%&!ed, and Mata was briefly on his shit list around that time.

i'd say it's fair to say van gaal overthought the group and that it was negative tactics that cost us overall by removing any advantage our having better players should have given us. in the end if all 6 of our games had been draws that would have been about right.

nqat the players were £#%&!ing £#%&! in that psv game though, and the way the likes of cska and wolfsburg opened us up down the middle and moved our centre backs (smalling) out of position so easily suggested that we weren't good enough to go much further in the competition anyway...

the progress of wolfsburg does show that the group was largely underestimated though, deliberately so to fit the abu/anti-lvg narrative.

Wolfsburg are only 8th in the Bundesliga though, benefited from drawing Gent in the first knock out round. Very good last night, unexpected, perhaps Madrid were suffering from a hangover from Barca but they deserved their win.
