We do not need all 3 of Hargreaves, Scholes and Carrick in this type of match. If Scholes was 25 it would be a genuine option, but he is 32 and is most comfortable sitting deep and dictating play at this stage. He is not capable of playing off the main striker anymore, lacks the mobility and speed to be effective in that role. Hargreaves and Carrick also operate deep, all 3 of them could leave the attack isolated, especially as we are lacking a target man(Saha) at the moment.

The closest to last seasons successful formation, plenty of movement, pace and counter attacking ability. Hargreaves if fit could be slipped in at right back to provide more impetus than Brown.

Carrick, Scholes and Hargreaves at this time would equate to 3 deep lying midfielders, 4-5-1 in effect really. O'Shea, Eagles and Fletcher have bene the ones making the forward runs from midfield in pre season.

only thing for sure about team selection this season is that we will have some quality on the bench and the ability to mix things around a bit, good news.

I'd start Hargreaves, he hasn't had a great deal of football and we will need him in the 2 away games that follow.
