Quaresma was so good in the last leg, now he's been subbed off at half time.

Classic him really. Never made good on what he promised.

maybe the sin bin for a yellow is the answer then, but there still needs to be a mechanism to stop desperation foul play in the closing stages as well, otherwise it's a free hit.

players damage the spectacle, not the punishments they get for it
And that's good for the game? Managers hooking players who haven't been booked because they got a yellow card in a match last month? But players can't play with the breaks on generally, especially at this stage of the competition. Hence Porto losing two key players for tonight, and many others missing finals before they relaxed those rules. And they shouldn't have to walk that tightrope.

The sin bin idea is unworkable, imo. How do you police a player being out for the right amount of time without his team time-wasting to negate the advantage. Teams will react by killing the game until their player is allowed back on. The rules have to benefit the game. I wouldn't mind Rafabz idea of a panel taking decisions on an individual basis, but atm players miss huge games for minor indiscretions.

Football suffers. Bayern killed Porto early down the flanks tonight, with both full-backs, who are two of their best players, missing.
