It does increase the value, but really only for players that are in demand. If a team wants to sign a player with only a year or two left on their contract, and the player is up for the move, then the selling club is under pressure to sell, as he would be worth less with only a year left on the contract (with the threat of leaving on a free when the contract is up), and then available on a free once the contract is up.
If the player has 4 years left on the contract then the selling club can take the stance of 'pay up or £#%&! off, the player is contracted for 4 more years, we have no need to sell.'
Of course that only works if the player is in high demand from another club, or if the club who are selling don't want to let him go. Neither is the case with Jones. In fact clubs will probably know we want to offload the @#%&!, the length of his contract will probably work against us a bit.
It can increase the value, but not in the case of Jones imo.
