He was considered the future of English defenders and a classy player. There was a lot of competition to sign him. Didn’t he give away a penalty in his first game? I remember a few comments at the time that we should have signed Tony Mowbray instead.

He was just what we needed at the time. Loved him.

I remember the Prem League doing an annual 100m sprint competition between all clubs.

Think Pally won it one year

Rio was signed from West Ham not Real Madrid, both record signings for a defender you twonk.

It could have been far worse. Liverpool had just beaten us to the signing of Glenn Hysen.

Reminds me of Harry Maguire. Got his head on £#%&!ing everything. Both gonna develop alzheimers for the cause though...Pally's already got the early symptoms of memory loss and headaches
Haha brilliant He is probably more dominant in the air than Maguire even now.

Part of the team that brought the title back after 26 years.

indeed. aside from the obvious.

however, there was a very different response to the signings. you can't say rio was underrated when he signed, but pally definitely was.

Thumbs up

Loved Pally proper centre half, tackled like AWB, could play and was always just quick enough, regardless of opponent (except Romario).

Looked absolutely £#%&!ed from the 5th minute, always

Huge fan of a Mars bar.

Top player, in my time watching utd would only put McGrath Rio and Stam above him. Weren't he player of the year as well early 90's, dont remember exactly what year or whether it was players player or football writers.
