Just watched it again in full and, if Mata hadn't done what he did, Fellaini would have been man of the match for me. All over the £#%&!ing place, winning tackles, winning headers, taking up great positions and really good technique with smart ball movement, from minute one to minute ninety four.
What's impressed me most, and with the obvious caveat that it's a really small sample, is that he clearly has taken that nasty, spiteful, niggly edge off of his game and replaced it with pure application and concentration. Hopefully it continues, but it could turn out that the best thing for the player was the disassociation with Moyes and proper guidance from a proper manager. Well done. |

1. "Maybe Southampton's objectives have changed. They were looking to be a Champions League club, I believe." 2. "We are seeing now the player we all know Liverpool had – which is one of the best full-backs in the world.” The player? Glen Johnson. 3. "When you’ve got the ball 65-70% of the time, it’s a football death for the other team. We’re not at that stage yet, but that’s what we will get to. It’s death by football. You just suck the life out of them." Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa – 75% possession Liverpool 2-2 Middlesbrough (won 14-13 on pens) – 72% Liverpool 0-0 Hull – 66% Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool – 65% Crystal Palace 3-1 Liverpool – 64% 4. "Look at Tottenham. If you spend more than £100 million, you expect to be challenging for the league." 5. “We play with 11 men, other teams play with 10 men and a goalkeeper.” 6. ""But when you're not in it, even though this club is a worldwide, monumental club, we found it difficult because the best players want to play in the best competitions. "Any club will suffer the same when they're not in there. There is no doubt it will hurt you, but they (United) will know that." |
