It may come as a suprise to most observers as the pro Shearer media like to pretend he didn't play in the old First Division but he managed 158 games pre Premiership and his goalscoring record wasn't a lot to write home about (43 goals). When you include his pre FAPL record and add it to his FAPL era career the comparison makes very interesting reading -

Shearer
Appearances - 733
Goals - 379

Goals to Game Ratio - 1 Goal every 1.93 Games

Cole
Appearances - 539
Goals - 283

Goals to Game Ratio - 1 Goal every 1.90 Games

If we go one step further and remove the penalty kick goals from both players then it gets even more interesting. The total penalties scored by both players is -

Shearer - 65
Cole - 5

Revised Comparison (not including Penalties)

Shearer
Appearances - 733
Goals - 379

Goals to Game Ratio - 1 Goal every 2.33 Games

Cole
Appearances - 539
Goals - 283

Goals to Game Ratio - 1 Goal every 1.94 Games
& PL only

Quote:
Shearer
FAPL Appearances - 559
FAPL Goals - 283

Goals to Games Ratio - 1 Goal per 1.97 Games

Cole
FAPL Appearances - 407
FAPL Goals - 199

Goals to Games Ratio - 1 Goal per 2.04 Games

Without Penalty Goals?

Shearer FAPL Penalty Goals - 41
Cole FAPL Penalty Goals - 4

Shearer
FAPL Appearances - 559
FAPL Goals - 242

Goals to Games Ratio - 1 Goal per 2.31 Games

Cole
FAPL Appearances - 407
FAPL Goals - 195

Goals to Games Ratio - 1 Goal per 2.09 Games

Coal was a great striker and for the most part finished things off well.

However as an all round footballer he was pretty limited; rooney is a far more accomplished player today than coal has ever been in his career.

Coal did a good job for us at the time though and i certainly don't hold any grudges against him despite the fact he played for city.

Cole was an all round brilliant player, first time lay offs, unselfish, brave, far better on the ball than he was given credit for, and a more intelligent football brain as well. Cole was occasionally deployed on the left win by Fergie, and he took to it a lot better than Rooney did, games like Fiorentina and Porto showed how effective he was.

He did a great job for us.
I really couldn't care if he played for citeh, he was a £#%&!ing star. Anyone that goes to the Nou camp or the stadio Del Alpi and scores world class goals should be honoured.

the only argument i ever hear off people who don't like him (reds, i mean) is "he needed 5/12/random made up number attempts to score"
