Imagine if they got smashed 10-0 though and the result of such a crushing defeat cracked their fragile confidence and sent them spiraling down the Premier League

But we are talking about them being drawn in the same group, wouldn't their respective results against the two other teams in the group be a bigger determining factor in either team progressing?

Teams are drawn in groups of 4. 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 point is awarded for a draw. The top two teams from each group progresses to the round of 16 knockout phase of the competition, the third place team enters the Europa League

I'm so glad the subject of the Champions League has come up again.

Law of averages would suggest we'll be nowhere near the Final next season, so the best we can hope for is that no other English team wins it.

2009/10 - Quarter-Final
2008/09 - Final
2007/08 - Final
2006/07 - Semi-Final

Yeah, no chance we'll make the Final next season

united's record has been very good and some of the actual performances have been superb in the past 5 seasons. that will go to shit if the new keeper bottles united or doesn't fit in, of course because the whole thing has been built around one of the best defences in football history. the string of records achieved over the period proves this - unbeaten records, clean sheet records, winning streaks at home and so on...

Well yeah, you've just made my point for me.
We've had it so good for so long (relatively speaking)...it can't last forever.

Throb (surprisingly) makes an excellent point here.
The signing of the new keeper is absolutely key to how we perform over the next few years - in all competitions, but Europe especially.
