Hearing Belgium have set a terrible precedent.

Scrapping the league and awarding it to Club Bruges who currently have a 15 point lead

Needs to be ratified by the clubs but no way anyone would object to this happening in the UK.

EDIT: Seems they only had one game left to play so not quite the same situation

The Belgian Premier League have indeed done this, but under the regulations, the premier league clubs have to vote on it to make it final. In addition, there is not yet any decision as to who gets the CL/Waffer places as these were/are always decided in playoffs.... which of course have not even started.

What about relegations and promotions?

Were they already decided?

That’s where it gets messy.

In the lower leagues, it's decided on the position of 12th March. Any playoffs were cancelled.

For the premier and championship neither promotions nor relegation are yet decided. One promotion playoff match tie was halted after the first match and they've no idea how to sort that out yet. Closed doors was a possibility, but they are acutely aware that players are not fit and the lockdown is still in effect, thus... we wait.

I should add that they won't be playing again this season, that has been decided. They will try to form a "workgroup" to try to sort it out. If it's as effective as the one trying to forma government, then the decision on this may well announced sometime in 2023... or later

My local club was in dire straits before all this and it was likely we'd be playing non league next year.... Corona saved them as they now stay up.

Promotion/relegation should be scrapped, all league positions null and void and any money yet to be distributed should be done so equally between all the clubs in the league.

Expunging the whole season would in effect solve the CL/EL places as well as it would be as if the whole season never happened and we start again as we did at the beginning of the 2019/2020 season.

I'm wondering if say the Belgian association did that unilaterally and said these are the clubs that we put forward for CL/EL next season, if Uefa would accept it ?

UEFA wouldn't have any choice. How the various slots for their competitions are handed out is entirely down to the domestic FAs I believe. So the FA could give Liverpool a place in the CL in perpetuity if they really wished.

They weren't 'awarded' anything if they'd already won it. Liverpool would have to be give the title without actually winning it. Little bit different.

Brugge didn't win it. The league is only part of the story. You can finish top at the end of the regular season, but not be champion as you also have to win the play offs, (top six play each other twice, thus ten more games) which can throw up a lot of upsets.

Yes, the Belgian Premiership is complicated, perhaps overly so, but the playoffs generate so much revenue it won't be changed in the foreseeable

How it works is on Wiki... if you're interested.

Absolutely £#%&!ing ridiculous amounts of stupid ideas being banded about instead of facing the reality which is there's only one realistic choice.

The £#%&!ing corporate greed in football is utterly disgusting.

Thumbs down

That Gordon Taylor is a loathsome little £#%&!ing @#%&! isn't he. Not a hint of PL players taking a hit on their £100k and more p.w wages nor will there be if he has anything to do with it. Gladys making the tea meanwhile is £#%&!ed off home with a kick up the arse and told not to come back if she doesn't take a pay cut.

It's sad but I'd love to see the game I love hit absolute rock bottom and have to start all over again from nothing. The money and greed is just repugnant.

The Belgian league announced earlier Thursday that Club Brugge would be awarded the title if the plan to end the season was confirmed at a general assembly meeting on April 15.

But that could see Brugge denied a place in the Champions League.

“Since participation in UEFA club competitions is determined by the sporting result achieved at the end of a full domestic competition, a premature termination would cast doubts about the fulfillment of such condition,” the letter by the European football officials said, without mentioning the situation in Belgium.
Some subtle coercion from Uefa there for the Belgian FA to reverse their decision ?

Apart from anything else Gordon Taylor is bloody ancient now, isn't it time he handed over to someone else?
