Default Villarreal vs Manchester United : Official Matchday Thread - 23/11/21 @ 5.45pm

[SIZE="4"]Man United - Champions League so far

[SIZE="4"]Villarreal - Champions League so far

[SIZE="4"]Team News:
Man United:
Greenwood tested positive for Covid and may not be part of the squad. Pogba and Varane still out, Cavani and Shaw are doubts

Villarreal:
Moreno likely out while still recovering from a hamstring injury.

[SIZE="4"]Previous Meeting:
We last met Villarreal at Old Trafford nearly two months ago after two straight defeats in English competitions, against West Ham in the EFL cup, and then Aston Villa in the league. Things looked like they were getting worse after Villarreal started creating opening after opening in the first 30 minutes of the game, only to be kept at bay by De Gea. We undeservedly went into half-time level, and creating little in the way of chances. But it didn't take Villarreal long after the restart to make the breakthrough as just over 5 minutes into the restart, a Dalot that had already spent 50 minutes getting tormented by Danjuma, got caught again, allowing Danjuma to cut back an easy chance for Alcacer to put away.

This eventually woke us up and after putting some sustained pressure on Villarreal, we were level less than 10 minutes later courtesy of a wonderful Telles volley, direct from a wide free kick. Keeping up the pressure the next big chance came for us in the 79th minute when Dalot put in a beauty of a ball for Cavani, who couldn’t make enough contact and saw his header go wide of the near post. 5 minutes later Villarreal forced a goal line scramble in front of De Gea, with the bodies of Telles and Varane doing enough to force the ball out for a corner.

Into the 5 minutes of injury time, we thought our chance to win it had come and gone after Ronaldo fired in a cross for Lingard to attack at the near post. To Lingards credit he was able to get the touch he needed, but some sharp goalkeeping kept the goalbound effort out. Thankfully the ball broke for us again less than a minute later after a sloppy pass in midfield allowed Bruno to get Cavani away. Cavani did well to hold up the ball and initiate a neat passage of play and a peach of a cross from Fred to Ronaldo who played a one-two with Lingard, and squeezed a finish through a barrier of bodies.

[SIZE="4"]Match Tit Bits

This is the 6th time Villarreal will meet us in the Champions League, more than they’ve met any other team in the tournament. They’ve not won any of the previous 5.

As we are unbeaten in the 5 games we’ve faced Villarreal in this competition, there are only two other teams we have faced more without suffering a defeat (CSKA Moscow & Bayer Leverkusen).

Since losing to us in the last minute in September, Villarreal have won their last two Champions League games, both of which were against Young Boys.

We’ve failed to keep a single clean sheet in the competition so far, conceding 7 goals in the four games so far. The last time we conceded at least 7 goals in a Champions League group stage was 98/99, where we conceded exactly seven.

Two clean sheet and it’s practically ours

[SIZE="4"]Match Prediction:
Carrick having a 90 minute panic attack.

A different formation, Donny in CM and some defending would be a good start.

if the players hated the manager, I would be optimistic. Much like post jose relief.

but they didn't and the coaching staff is awful.

I'm going for 0-2

Couple of changes, Donny as captain, Blow up dolls with Poch clothing in the crowd and we have a chance.

Nothing has changed, no new manager bounce. Bright first 5 minutes for us followed by the usual descent into mediocrity (at best). Easy win for whoever we are playing.

Looking forward to this.

I'm not expecting much... but it has a novelty factor.

Reckon we will thrash them soundly until both us and them cry

Think we'll play for 0-0 and either lose 1-0 or draw 1-1. Hope Carrick shows respect and refuses to sit in "the boss's" seat.

Could see a new Carrick imo. Strong coffees or similar and stood pitch side 90 minutes. Maybe offering out their bench multiple occasions
