I know 2 fairly well known guitarists who have tried many times, and failed, to play rhythm and lead simultaneously like Wilko. They just can’t do it

PlanetRock replayed their My Planet Rocks show with Wilko the other day...

...and the first song he picked was by Jimi Hendrix, who also used to play rhythm and lead at the same time. Watching the video earlier I noticed Wilko uses the same technique as Jimi of wrapping his thumb around the top of the fret board to play the bass notes in the chords, leaving a spare finger for the more widdly bits.
