World Cup 2022: Why Casemiro is key to Brazil's hopes in Qatar - Gilberto Silva

Why Fred is the perfect midfield partner
You cannot do all this on your own, of course.

Casemiro started alongside Lucas Paqueta in Brazil's first group game, but he finished the game alongside his usual partner for the national team, his Manchester United team-mate Fred.

I have watched them play many matches together now and, for Brazil, they have lost only once - the 2021 Copa America final against Argentina.

It works very well because Casemiro sits at the back like I did and Fred is more mobile, like Kleberson was when he was next to me in our midfield at the 2002 World Cup.

But Fred is also defensively strong. He is not just in front of Casemiro, he plays alongside him too and helps him do his job.

Brazil are mental, why play Fred who is utter shit week in, week out when you have Bruno Guimarăes on the bench who has been sensational this season? Likewise Raphinha who barely gets a look in at Barca and has done nothing when on the pitch when you have Anthony in the same position?

International managers seem like idiots intent on making it harder for themselves.

All of them, the Argie manager, even Deschamps tried to £#%&! up winning it last time and his selections now. Brazil are all over the shop with their flair vs function & just seem to pick shit players when they have good ones.

Southgate is just an absolute fraud. Worse, a boring one.

The result is on the pitch. Turgid stuff in this first half.

Wake me up if Antony comes on
