I read that 20% of the players across the top 5 leagues in Europe will be out of contract on July 1st. Teams can't just extend them because some players already have agreements in place to move clubs. For example Hakim Ziyech is supposed to join Chelsea on July 1st. His Chelsea contract is worth 3x more than his Ajax one. If UEFA dictate that player contracts have to be extended to complete the season, he's going to be massively out of pocket and could sue.

It's a huge £#%&!ing mess. The only way to resolve it is to just scrap the season. As others have said, it'd have been done ages ago if anyone but the dippers were top. It's really £#%&!ing tough luck for them but they're running out of alternatives.
It's going to have to be agreed by all the various national FAs tho, isn't it?
I wonder which ones are the current hold-outs?

Also read somewhere that Liverpool and Watford change shirt manufacturers in June so won't be able to play in one of the kits so which do they wear and who will sue if they are wearing the wrong one? Same with shirt sponsors.

They are arguing like crazy about it here. All the lower leagues have ended their season according to their positions on 12th March. It's caused some complaints from those relegated, but whatever. For the top league(s) it's a bigger problem as the final winners and European places are determined by a set of playoffs (mini leagues then finals). There is a lot of money at stake and no one is giving an inch.

It'll take a Uefa decision to resolve it everywhere.. trouble is, then all the tops clubs in Europe may sue them.. so they'll have to come to some pre-agreement first.

Yup, and some players will change boot sponsors as well. Imagine being with Nike for 19/20 and having to play the last games of that season in Adidas.

It's a lawyers dream...Kerching !

You can't have 22 players, all the subs, the tv crew, managers, staff etc etc all in one place - it's not allowed. Football thinking they are above the virus ffs.

Exactly. I really am interested as to how the logistics for this work.

All Champions League and Europa League matches have been suspended "until further notice" by Uefa because of the global coronavirus pandemic.

All national team games in June have also been postponed, including play-off matches for Euro 2020 - already postponed to 2021 - and qualifying matches for the Women's Euro 2021.
Quote:
Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said last week the season could be lost if play does not start by the end of June.

"If we don't succeed in restarting, the season will probably be lost," the Slovenian said.

He told Italian newspaper La Repubblica: "There is a plan A, B and C.

"The three options are to start again in mid-May, in June or at the end of June.

"There is also the possibility of starting again at the beginning of the next [season], starting the following one later. We will see the best solution for leagues and clubs."

Ceferin says that playing remaining games behind closed doors would have to be an option across Europe.

"It's hard for me to imagine all the matches behind closed doors, but we still don't know whether we'll resume, with or without spectators," he said.

"If there was no alternative, it would be better to finish the championships."

A mini-tournament to decide the Champions League and Europa League is expected to be one option put forward to ease fixture congestion caused by the coronavirus crisis.
Restarting a competition after, at lest, four months with players being unfit.

Great message that will send out

Regardless of that, to play the games behind closed doors is illegal in this country right now.
And if they are granted some kind of special exemption, then the other leagues in the country will want it. Then other sports. Where do you stop?
I appreciate they are stuck between a rock & a hard place & either option will be difficult, painful & will piss off a lot of people. But there's only really one logical option.

Finishing the European competitions *on their own* might just be viable, simply don't see how they can fit in the domestic leagues as well.

Could feasibly finish the FA Cup too, where the pre-season friendlies would. Replace the Community Shield slot with the FA Cup Final.

What are you going to do for the new season of Champions League? In a normal year the new season begins in July with the early qualifying rounds to earn a place in the group stages. There can't be an overlap between finishing this season's tournament and starting the next. Scrap this season. All of it.

Yes there can. Its Valetta v Rhyl in July. None of the teams left in it would be playing in it until September.

yeah lets finish the FA Cup too, unless we go out then scrap it.

If all was scrapped and City were banned from Europe next season (wont happen), who gets Champions League?
