What a player Root is. He just makes it all look so easy. He plays shots comfortably and scores quickly off the good balls as well as punishing bad balls. I think he will retire as England's greatest without a doubt.

Kane Williamson out of the 2nd test with Covid.

England are unchanged. New Zealand, on the other hand, make plenty of changes.

The tourists opt for four seamers. Matt Henry is in for Ajaz Patel, Henry Nicholls for Kane Williamson, and Michael Bracewell for Colin de Grandhomme.

England: Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (capt), Ben Foakes (wk), Matthew Potts, Jack Leach, Stuart Broad, James Anderson.

New Zealand Tom Latham (capt), Will Young, Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (wk), Michael Bracewell, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee, Matt Henry, Trent Boult.

Every captain has a time he regretted bowling first on his CV. Stokes getting his in early.
