I see these formations and the thing that strikes me most is that for me, as it stands at the end of last season Smalling is a far more accomplished centre half than Jones. I think both will benefit hugely from better coaching but Smalling was good in the centre at times last year.
I honestly think that having a World Class coaching staff will make our squad look much much better even without the new faces. I reckon we'll walk the league. |

Jones and Smalling both need a run in central defence tbf but Smalling needs to stop nodding off and leaving his post and Jones, well, he is a bit mental and needs to do less charging around and concentrate on his positioning a bit more. Possibly a bit harsh to be too critical of either given the way they've been used so far but still feel it's a bit risky to put both in together though.

I'd be very surprised if a centre back doesn't come in. Losing Vidic and Rio is a major blow and there's not a £#%&!ing chance van Gaal will put his faith in a Jones / Evans / Smalling defence.
Be more interesting to see what he does with the position behind the front line because for me, Mata, Kagawa, Rooney, Welbeck and Januzaj are too many players considering we've no European football. |
