The lyrics

"He's a centre half
He's our number four
Watch him defend
And we watch him score
He can pass the ball
Calm as you like
He' Virgil Van Dijk, he's Virgil Van Dijk"

The problem with designing tables on accumulating xg & xga is that,

1) for xg - creating enough to win 2-0 or 3-0/4-0 & 5-0 doesn't make enough impact on a given result, however there's a larger chance in impact if the xgd in a game is closer to 1 goal or lesser. Then, more of 'luck' factor and conversion gets into play.

2) for xgd - if a team is conceding less than 0.5 or even 0.6 xga in a number of games, then it's not quite enough in those games in most cases to concede a goal, especially when the team has a good gk (like we do). So, in such individual games, the team has not actually conceded enough chances to concede a goal, which then implies, score 1 and you mostly win, and score 2 or more and you definitely win. However, when one accumulates xga on this basis and you have n games where a team concedes around or less than 0.5 xga and and hence not enough chances to concede, yet the xga accumulates over games and presents a tangible number that impacts the xgd but not enough individual results.

We don't have a specific number to make a distinction on how much of an impact a particular xg or xga will make in a given game, so we can't set a distinction in accumulation as well. This is problematic. It only works when there's a model like basstunedtored's where points are based on individual games' xgds to show whether what a team has done is enough to rake up the points or not.

Penalties have their own xg (defined in some models). It's actually a shot from a similar position as all other penalties with no defenders blocking, so it makes sense to maintain a separate xg for penalties and count it. I remember reading that it adds up to 0.7 xg in one of the models, i can't remember which one though. But to completely exclude them doesn't work for me, because in actual football, a penalty is indeed a high quality chance at that moment and deserves to be evaluated on that basis. If we exclude that, why not extend and exclude other set-piece xg as well? While this is better than just sorting teams by xgd, it is still very simplistic. A team that has two shots worth 0.35 xg each has more chance of winning than a team that has 10 worth 0.07, even though the total will be the same, for instance. But good luck/bad luck and of course finishing plays a huge part - as an example, watford had six clear cut chances at arsenal but didn't score any of them, and lost 2-0. That's a match arsenal should've lost on the underlying stats, but won.

Its a perfectly acceptable football chant. But the way he plays and sings it as though its the greatest piece of music written since Mozart hung up his quill is hilarious. He looks like he really thinks its important.

“I know that now the main headline will be ‘Klopp said’ but the number of interruptions in that game was just not cool,” Klopp said. “Two times in a row we won the fair play award in England and tonight we look like butchers after the yellow cards we had. It was clever of PSG, especially Neymar, but a lot of other players went down like it was really something serious and we were not that calm any more.

“We were aggressive, and unfortunately negative aggression doesn’t help in football, we got rather frustrated and angry. But we have to deal with it, that’s our job. If the ref lets that happen then we have to deal with it.”

Klopp added: “There are a lot of things you can do. You can give yellow cards for everything. If you go down, if you act like you die and then the next moment you get up, yellow card. It’s unsportsmanlike behaviour. In the end, it’s hectic and everyone is going down. I don’t want to say Paris didn’t deserve and I don’t expect help from a ref, I just expect him to calm all these things down. It doesn’t happen that often, to be honest, but it happened tonight.

“The crowd was up, it’s really difficult and we were not calm enough. Even Joe Gomez got a yellow card. He’s the nicest boy on this planet and he was close to getting a red. But we lost because they scored two, we scored one and we didn’t play good enough.”

Both Salah and Mane had a little fall in the box themselves.
