Default Want a free Xbox One?

Looks like we're all getting one by way of a Windows 10 update

Quote:
Windows 10 April 2019 Update will play native Xbox One games on PC.

It’s no secret that Microsoft has been looking at ways to get people without an Xbox One to play its games, and now an early version of the upcoming Windows 10 April 2019 Update (also known as 19H1) hints at how Microsoft is tweaking the operating system to potentially make it possible to play native Xbox games on PC.

As Brad Sams on Thurrot.com explains, people who try out Windows 10 build 18334, the aforementioned early version of the April 2019 Update, also get a chance to try out Microsoft’s State of Decay game for free.

This struck some people as a little odd, as Microsoft doesn’t usually include free games in its early versions of Windows 10 – unless it was planning some big changes to how Windows 10 handles games.

When you download State of Decay, rather than downloading the game from the Microsoft Store server (serverdl.microsoft.com), which is usually where PC versions of Xbox games are kept, the game instead downloads from assets1.xboxlive.com.

It therefore looks like you're able to download the Xbox One version of the game, rather than a PC port. When the game is downloaded, it appears in the .xvc file format, which is an Xbox One file format, and this file can be installed using the updated PowerShell application in Windows 10 April 2019 Update.

Running the file pops up a legacy DirectX installation window. The latest build of the Windows 10 April 2019 Update also adds a new Gaming Service app (Microsoft.GamingServices) which installs two drivers xvdd.sys = XVD Disk Driver (Microsoft Gaming Filesystem Driver) gameflt.sys = Gaming Filter (Microsoft Gaming Install Filter Driver).

WalkingCat, a Twitter user who is well known for digging into Microsoft’s software for clues about what the company is planning, noted that xsapi.dll = Durango Storage API, XCrdApi.dll = Durango XCRDAPI are referenced in the files, and Durango was famously Microsoft’s codename for the Xbox One.

This is potentially big news, as it means that the Windows 10 April 2019 Update, and future versions of Windows 10, could play Xbox One games natively, without developers having to recode the game to run on PC.

While most Xbox One games are available on PC via Microsoft’s PlayAnywhere initiative, this new feature means it’ll be much quicker and easier for developers to get their games on PC.

It makes sense from Microsoft’s perspective, as the company has been looking at ways of making its Microsoft Store on PC and its Xbox Store on console work closely together. This move could mean there’s only one store across all devices.

Who knows, it might even mean you can insert an Xbox One game disc into a PC and run the games from there as well.
Cool. Shame there's nothing worth playing on it mind.

In other words you as an adult pc user want to frequent the lobby used predominantly by teenage/pre-teen Xbox users?

Always had my suspicions about you tbpedo.

Idea is that it’s not about the device. Big push on having all your games anywhere any device tablet whatever.

You will still be able to sit down have the traditional sparky setup but it’s the service that’s powering it.

If you have seen they are pushing Xbox live to the switch too. Great for both platforms.

you can do that now iirc. Games like sea of thieves are xbox n pc, same as forza series. Must admit ive not unmuted the chat yet for any reason though. Not worth the kiddyscreaming

Can usually get a month xbox pass for pc for like £1. Loads oftitles available to try it out, see how it all works on your pc before committing.

What is actually decent on the Xbox that isn't available for pc?

I'd like to try the Master Chief Collection if they enable mouse and keyboard play. Only other games I can think of are Ori and Sunset Overdrive but they're on Steam anyway. Never been bothered with Gears of War and who knows if this plan (if it happens at all) will include third party games being playable on a computer.

Sony really did pummel MS this gen.

I think all xbox one games are available to play on Windows 10 (on DX11 Windows 7? DENIED) and have been for a few years now. Their exclusives are pretty shit though. Halo? Forza is great though if that's your thing. Sea of Thieves fun for a while, but ultimately a shallow experience.

Nice as a PC owner to get a big backlog of stuff to play though with their cheap game pass, kinda liket he PlayStation plus store i suppose. As a non console owner nice to slum it with the plebs now and then.

I already play Sea Of Thieves with an xbox user (missus). I would like more games that I could do this with.

Happy wife, happy life.

Btw, is the Xbox One hardware compatible with 360 and original Xbox games out of the box or does MS have to write game specfic code to make them so?

The entire Xbox catalogue on pc would be pretty epic, nqat.

Think they do game specific code, but have a rather large selection of the old stuff. All the worthwhile stuff at least. PC cant necessarily play the xbox 360 back catalogue games though via xbox pass for some reason. Think its to maintain the illusion that cross platform requires DX12, mainly to encourage stragglers to upgrade to windows 10. Will check later if they have more
