Default Where would a defensive midfielder leave Carrick.

Who most of us agree has really come into his own this season..

What a pass yesterday

Would you disrupt Carrick's natural game by sticking a 'Makelele' type in there?

Or is it more important to have another attacking/linking midfielder who can run, do a decent job of winning the ball back higher up.

Had this discussion with a mate the other day. I don't see a defensive midfielder as a priority at all. Someone to complement Carrick/Cleverley would be ideal. Its a shame because Anderson seems to be that player but he can't be relied upon.

A Wilshere type player would be ideal, imo. Bit more bite to him than Clev, and probably similar going forward aswell..

No. It would release him from having to chase people around which isn't his strong suit tbf.

Every time i think of it - playing all these games w/o a specialist screening the defence...

I think Carrick is perfect in the role he's got imo.

Decent tackler, perfect interceptor, great passer.

What he needs is someone with a bit of energy/drive to help him out.

Something we've never, ever done, really, with the exception of a season or so with an ailing Roy Keane..

Agreed. Not a specialist destroyer like makelele but somebody who can contribute in other areas too. They would need to have decent defensive capabilities though.

Thumbs down

Pairing Carrick with a mobile, strong, defensively astute midfielder would obviously be a disaster. Just imagine if he had a reliable midfielder partner who wasn't a fat mess/piss weak shithouse. It'd be awful.

keeping the ball higher up the pitch is a priority as opposed to someone to merely act as a destroyer.

someone like wilshere would be idea.

obviously as would have dembele. i still can't believe we didn't go in for him.

buy a very good midfielder who can tackle, pass, run, break up play and weigh in with a couple of goals and it wouldn't matter what you do with carrick, does it?

carrick's very good and tidy. But much like how van persie has shown what an actual world class goal scorer looks like as opposed to wayne rooney....

put an actual world class centre mid alongside carrick and we'd see him for what he is. nice and neat.

in the kingdom of the blind.....

They are all midfielders who can defend.

Hargreaves was basically a RB for us

P. Nev was a full back put into midfield during injury crises or when someone specific need kicking (Vieira). Butt and Fletcher, while being better at the defensive side of the game, both had license to get up the pitch. Only Keane parked himself in front of the back 4 permanently, and only when he was too £#%&!ed to get up and down, and that was during the 4-5-1 experiment..

The problem people mainly seem to be complaining about is our ability to keep the ball and pass it well. The last thing we want to enhance our ability to keep the ball is someone in the mould of Scott Parker or Claude Makelele who can get in the way, tactically foul and generally protect the back 4, but struggle to pass more than 10 yards. And replacing Carrick would completely go against what we need.

not having a go at him. he's a decent player.

not half as good as people would like to think but that's because he's surrounded by shit. hth.

that song comparing him to scholes. it would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
