Is it really? In the league the gap between teams that regularly compete in the Champions League and the rest huge, you've got half the teams just happy to stay up so they can get their share of next seasons TV revenue. In the Champions League the same eight or so teams are guaranteed to have most of the quarter final spots year in year out. It's a freak season when a four time winner like Ajax even make it that far.
The top two tournaments were already low jeopardy, now the fig leaf of equality has been stripped away. It's a major move away from sporting merit but it beats the slow death by finances that was being inflicted on football.
