Default By the time we got to London it was a socialist train

Shows the lack of gravitas of the current crop of candidates

He was wrong about the ideological vacuum

I like Benn. Just like I like Ken Clarke, Tarzan et al.

Politics should have strong characters.

Sorry to interrupt this love-in, but Benn almost wrecked the Labour party beyond repair three decades ago

Talk to many of those who know him. They will be *far* less complimentary than the star-struck audiences who lap up his simplistic homilies (most of whom probably voted LibDem in May)

Some of us also remember his gruesome, fawning "interview" with Saddam Hussein

Ive seen Benn speak, very impressive, but as Toilet Tory sniffer will attest I am very judgemental against people with double barrelled names and titles ( even if dropped) and therefore I never fully trust him

A bit harsh. He has a tremendous grasp of history and how it matters. The trouble with the left is expectation of perfection an almost religious piety. Socialism is a simple philosophy.

I have noticed you repeatedly bracket Kinnock and Smith in with Blair, borsers........

Mistaken, IMO.

true. blair was just the piece of plastic who sat on top of it, kinnock and smith did the real damage.

Disagree again, needless to say.

Take a look at the 1992 GE Labour manifesto. It was a recognisably "social democratic" document, just as much as (say) the 1979 one was. All Kinnock did, really, was revert the party to its "default" position following the lurch to the left in the early 1980s. Smith continued with this - had he lived and become PM, his government would have differed from the actual post-97 one in several significant ways.......

Could you see PM Smith uncritically backing Bush over Iraq?? Me neither
