I don’t think armchair meant it disparagingly. De Jong plays very much like a bridge between defence and attack, which is pretty much what a ‘water carrier’ is. Not quite as defensive overall as Busquets for example, but definitely not an attacking midfielder - he’s exactly the kind of player we’re crying out for.

Also Carrick was world class but for different reasons - similar to Rice in that half of what he did was off the ball, so sometimes it was harder to see the impact he was having until he wasn’t on the pitch and suddenly you realise there’s no one shepherding absolutely everything in our half of the pitch.

I quite like Neves. We should probably be buying both of them.
