Default Robbo - The Golden Goal

https://www.theguardian.com/football...droidApp_Other

Lovely little piece this. Very much sums up how I felt about Robbo. Definitely remember running round the playground wishing I was him. Glad he got his hands on the league but it definitely didn't feel like it was his team anymore.

Imagine what he could have achieved barring injury? What a player.

And the most painful part of it is that it was all true. Not hyperbole, not exaggeration. Just true. Remember him being stretchered off in the autumn and you knew we wouldn’t win anything that season.

He certainly wouldn't have been running backwards next to Maradona like Peter Reid was for the 2nd goal.

Though tbf even Reid looked OK compared to Terry Fenwick

We were never so likely to win it with people such as him as regulars in the team, were we?

Totally, not sure why but I was talking to my son about him a few days ago, and said 'with him we could beat anyone, without him we could lose to anyone'

what a player he was.

Ridiculous transfer fee was my thinking at the time as always we were chasing pieces of the league winning jigsaw.

Absolute snip.

I’m sure his debut was in Moss Side. 0-0 draw?

He did enough as I watched on from the United Kippax that we had landed a player.

I got my first season ticket in 1982 (10) and he was my United hero and our best player. I £#%&!ing loved him.

League debut - his first game for us was away at Spurs in the League Cup.

Neither is nostalgia.

How much for a peak Robbo in today's market?

Impossible to predict. I always use Besty in that equation. Think of the highest fee paid now, quadruple it and add more zeros.

Of course, he actually signed for us - on the OT pitch! - just before we played Wolves.

And it was a 5-0 United win

You'd have to be looking at £150m+.

Is that for the right foot or the left foot?

From what I can recall he could, unlike most, use both.

Loved Big Ron's justification of the fee: "It may seem like a lot of money, but it’s not a gamble, you know. you’re not even gambling with someone like him. This fella is solid gold"
