Fergie barely did anything day to day during his last 15 years in charge other than oversee things. 90% of it is to manage a group of people. Other aspects would be things like setting the Framework for the team, instructing the coaches, buying and selling players etc. Individuals getting better is down to player and coach, and most should be done by the age of 23 or so. The most a manager would usually do is tell the player or coach what to work on, and that would mostly be with the younger, still developing players. You train, set the framework for the players to operate within, issue general tactical instructions for the match, and then it’s up to the players to play football together and work things out. A manager doesn’t micro-manage the game. That’s the players.
Most international players of a certain age would take offence if someone tried to teach them something, which is why united never worked on various things under Fergie. It was assumed that being professionals of a certain age, and being good enough to be at united in the first place, they they could already do it. See ferdinand’s reaction to moyes telling him how to defend. A manager loses the dressing room with such an attitude. Same with van gaal issuing his detailed instructions and analysis by email after each match, which most players supposedly ignored.
Although Woodward is redefining the role as someone who babysits and molly coddles his assets whilst they do what they want. In which case it is just scribbling down names on paper and giving interviews. And taking the blame.
