Default Ferguson:21 that got away

Following on from yesterday's great signings, the MEN have done a good poll about ones that got away.

Of course you could never say how they would have fared so the order is a moot point. Nevertheless, some names I'd long forgotten, like Salas.

Christ, they've got more time on their hands than we have!

(They've put Shearer in twice too)

John Hartson...?

I would have thought Batistuta would have been on that list too?! and also that German who signed for the vermin instead on a free... Babel.

Thing is, we don't even know if most of those were genuine. So much speculation and very little truth. There's only a handful that we definitely know we've been in for because Fergie's confirmed it.

Ronaldinho and Shearer are the two biggies.

If we'd got Shearer in 96 then I think we'd have more European Cups.

Ronaldinho looks less of a miss as the years have gone by.

Fergie repeatedly tries to sign Stuart Pearce apparently.

You think? I'm not so sure, just l;ooking at his recent signings, he aint getting many wrong. Impressive for a man apparantly suffering according to you from some kind of dementia. Even more impressive that he won a title in such a condition last year.

Lilian Thuram
Kevin Hofland
Marc Overmars
Gabriel Batistuta
Rivaldo
Marcos Senna
Julien Escude

A few that we were reportedly close to signing.

Didn't he tear knee ligaments when he was walking his dog? so we signed Heinze instead.

I think he pulled them, slipped on a wet paving stone or something, Rennes refused to sell him to us anyway. Joined Ajax a year later, he's with Sevilla now, I think. We signed Heinze about 3 years later.

Batistuta, how I wish we'd got him Summer of 1996. Batigol and Eric up front, £#%&!ing hell, that would have been a sight!

Not really arsed we missed out on either Shearer or Ronaldinho. Cantona, Ole and Rooney all worked out being the better, long term buys.

Spot on.

I think if we'd signed Shearer we'd actually have less premierships rather than more champions leagues.

I tend to agree. Certainly, if we'd got him instead of Cantona during the 1992/3 season, we wouldn't have had any ware near the success we eventually achieved in the early to mid nineties.

Di Canio is a good shout. I still maintain we'd have won the European Cup in 2002, had we signed him. He was pure class at the time, which was desperately needed during that 2nd leg against Leverkusen. Still £#%&!s me off we let those @#%&!s knock us out
