thought we hadn't had a good rooney thread for at least ten minutes.

As for Wayne Rooney, he's been awful. There he was at Burnley this weekend, supposedly captaining the team - but I saw a player interested only in himself, doing nothing to try and lift his game or inspire his team-mates. The only thing in any way remarkable about his performance is that he collects £300,000 a week to play that badly.

thinks he should be dropped with falcao coming in. says some other stuff as well.

Once Van Perise is fully-fit again, Rooney must be the person to be dropped from United's new attacking line-up: for me, it'll be RVP and Falcao every time.

That'll leave Van Gaal with a big call to make: dropping Wayne Rooney.

I read Jamie Redknapp's column saying more or less the exact opposite - saying (ahead of the arrival of Di Maria and Falcao) that Rooney would be the only United player who'd get into the side at Chelsea or Manchester City. I actually laughed out loud when I read it, because it's just total rubbish - maybe Jamie's a friend of Wayne and doesn't want to upset him

Problem is LVG has made a rod for his own back by making him captain, much like Moyes did with the new contract, which makes any dropping of Rooney magnified by 1,000,000

I don't think he has. he'll drop him if need be.

Vidic was our captain last season and the gutless moyes left him out.

Wenger dropped vermaelen. I think the captaincy of a clue is one of the most overhyped aspects of the game. They have no actual authority or decisions to make. If they're a natural leader, that'll rise to the surface anyway.

I see them more as a figurehead.

van gaal has said a few things about this

1 that the captaincy is very important and a big part of his philosophy is that the captain represents that philosophy

2 that he has been very impressed with rooney in every aspect of his philosophy, hence why it was, he said, an easy decision to make him captain of said philosophy

3 that his philosophy is not to play people out of their natural position(s)


it'll be interesting to see whether he thinks rooney is a 10 now, because he didn't think he was recently when he listed how many 10s he had
