He had no say in it.
It was believed the club were fearful of exercising it and upsetting him whilst trying to get him to agree a new deal.
There was also a fear that he could sign a pre-contract with another club from January if we hadn't exercised it yet.
So the club had to either get him to renew before 31/12 or trigger the extension. The fact they have done it earlier means they either believe he'll sign and aren't worried about upsetting him, or they believe he wont sign and they need to lock him in for longer.
