However, the tale gets more bizarre, as within just a couple of hours, a journalist from the French paper Les Cahiers du Football (the publication that initially break the story) revealed through twitter that the news was fake. Quite an elaborate hoax if even The Times bought into, yes? But perhaps this is where things get really twisted: the monetary figures quoted in the Times report were never mentioned in the original Cahiers report – thus, begging the question, how did those numbers come about?
