Look at the games where he has played centre half with a decent manager.

He's 22 and mostly played out of position. Imo he's a natural talent but he's a central defender not a fullback or midfielder and the more he's played out of the position the worse he'll be when he gets back into his best position. Same goes for Smalling to a lesser/different degree.

Default I was going

To start a separate thread but it is linked to this.

We should buy John Terry.

He has never been fast but understands the game so well.

If Rio and Vidic are leaving then who would be better than him to nurture Jones and Smalling.

Not a wind up - he would be a great interim signing.

As for Jones - he is still a bit naive and needs a strong partner next to him over the next 2 seasons.

He has all the tools - just needs to grow into the role.

So he needs a consistent role as centre back only and with an established cb? Is the consensus that he will be one of the greats?

Couldn't the younger vidic do that role?

I think it's a shame Vidic left for just that reason (and what bigger indictment of the Moyes regime that to have the club captain sign for another team halfway through the season btw) but buying that @#%&! terry cannot be the answer, it just would feel really weird for so many reasons.

im in a minority of one that thinks jones can only play as a defensive midfielder.... far too much of a liability at centre back

Armers do you want to edit the title to sorting out the defence or something? Might as well have one thread for it.

I think he is a liability full stop, hence my initial question.

I know what you mean - we have signed Owen etc but agree Terry would be a huge step.

Just think he fits the bill - and can't think of many other defenders who fit the bill.

Vidic would have been ideal :-(

he's a dreadful midfielder imo as soon as he gets the ball he hasn't a clue what to do with it. He was good against Madrid away because he had a specific role to do, i.e. close down their midfielders, but he doesn't have the skill to be a Manchester United midfielder. insert joke about Darren Fletcher

I'd take some Dutch monster old war horse to do that role. The new manager will bring him.
