Hargreaves set for shock call to solve United defensive crisis

Manchester United's defensive injury crisis is so severe that Sir Alex Ferguson is considering recalling Owen Hargreaves to his squad to face Bolton as an emergency right back.

With Rafael and John O'Shea joining Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic on the sidelines, Jonny Evans doubtful and Gary Neville now retired, Ferguson could turn to a player who has managed just six minutes of first-team football in two-and-a-half years.

Hargreaves has trained all week after lengthy treatment in Germany and was withdrawn from a reserve game against Sunderland on Thursday.

The injury-plagued midfielder, 30, has battled to overcome chronic knee trouble since signing from Bayern Munich for £17million in 2007 and his last appearance for United against Wolves in November was cut short after only five minutes due to a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, the Manchester derby will kick off FA Cup semi-final weekend on April 16, the FA have confirmed, with City playing United at 5.15pm at Wembley. The match will be live on ITV1.

The tie between Bolton and Stoke will be the following day, kick-off 4pm, and be broadcast by ESPN.
