Default Missing Penalties

How are so many professional footballers missing penalties? I don't think it was so bad before as it is now. Is the concentration really lacking?

When I think of GOOD penalty takers like Le Tissier, Cantona, Shearer, Lampard - they are/were very confident, and rarely missed. I'd add Balotelli to that list as well perhaps.

Two matches of 2014 come to mind - United v Sunderland, and this Munchen v Arsenal match. Extremely poor penalties.

The players nowadays look shell-shocked when they have to take a pen. It's embarrassing really.

The young lad's let himself down there. He's got the talent and, given his age, the time to get things back on track, no doubt about that, but he's definitely going to have to put in some work if he wants to re-earn the trust and respect of his fellow forumistas.

I agree with Aman but a bit worried about admitting it now two fredsters have shot him down. Absolutely hate gaving a contrary view to the majority, especially when the ribbing gets nasty.

That said, Aman is right. Loads of penalties being missed lately.

The penalty standard and the increasing skill level skill within the game enhancing yearly are directly related.

Everybody would rather be a flash bastard then just make sure it hits the net. Look at Ozils for instance, style over substance. Such an important penalty too

Good point. Too many pelanty (Ged please note) takers these days do all that arty farty, stop/start, dummy the keeper and roll it down the middle bollox instead of the old school run up and @#%&! it as hard as you can low and in the corner

Any self-respecting striker who passes up the chance to take a penalty should be £#%&!ing ashamed of themselves. Obviously I'm talking about that overrated donkey Mandžukić, but it applies across the board.

A striker's job is to score goals. When they pass up the chance to take a penalty I do wonder if they really appreciate their own profession, and I also have to question their mental strength.

Imagine the likes of Van Nistelrooy, Raul, Cristiano Ronaldo, Romario etc. refusing to take penalties, ffs. The only acceptable exception is when a team possesses one of those rare penalty specialists (Le Tissier, Irwin, Hierro, Chilavert).

Yep ego plays a big part. But they don't care, they really don't care.

So based on a couple of games, you deduce that more penalties are being missed these days? I'd be very surprised if the stats showed that, but it's even more surprising a bright young fella like you would just automatically assume it.

Lampard has missed 2 in a row two different times in his career btw.

I would assume there are not more being missed, you just see more being missed as every match on the planet is televised and hilighted to death thanks to sky, ESPN etc.

Is it not a case of keepers being more agile that there is much more of a mind game now, rather than just picking a spot and belting it?

More are being missed due to players trying to be Barry Big Balls.

I don't think it's so much the agility of keepers that has seen more of a cat-and-mouse game develop in the last decade or so, but the law change that allows them to move on their line before the kick is taken. Players have learned to use this against keepers by keeping their head up and waiting for the keeper to commit, then just knocking it in the other way. Eden Hazard never looks down at the ball at all when he takes a penalty. Same with Balotelli. Still plenty of old-schoolers like Gerrard and Lampard tho who just pick a spot and hit it there firmly.

One of the rarest things in football is a well-taken penalty being saved. Good penalties hit the net; bad ones are saved. Think of a famous missed penalty - chances are it was badly taken. Bergkamp in 99, Anelka in 08 - bad penalties. Both waist-high and too close to the keeper. Hit the corner with pace and it won't matter how agile the keeper is.

it's easy to say that though, because if they go in nobody remembers them being bad penalties. Look at Berbatov vs Everton.
