This format of the past 15 years or so allows weaker or more inconsistent teams to get lucky. That was highly unlikely to happen under previous formats of the champions league, so the winners had a more genuine claim to being the best team in Europe, and it felt like it.

How can teams who’ve not won their domestic title for 29 and 40+ years be officially the best team in Europe? That’s why it’s lost prestige. It’s like saying Wigan were the best team in England when they won the fa cup.
Doubt you said this when our route to the final in 2011 was: Rangers, Valencia, Bursaspor > Marseille > Chelsea > Schalke

That route to the final just illustrates my point. I’ve been saying it since the format changed around 2003 or so. The two group stages prior to the current format was shit too.

Group winners plus some best runners up will always be the best thing for the competition from a sporting point of view. But the risks of competition isn’t wanted in the early stages.

Also there is a good chance their form will dip a bit next campaign, despite what the doomsters are currently saying.

(if only because teams will surely work out how to play against them a bit better)

Tickles me that at the fag end of his career he went to Wrexham for a season - and didn't score a single goal for them. That's almost Torres-esque.

If it’s any consolation, next time they play Roma there’s a decent chance they’ll have both sets of ultras baying for their blood.
