Thumbs up Fever Pitch - Story of the Premier League

Anyone watching this on BBC2?

Documentary about the rise of the Premier League.

Absolutely brilliant. Shearer the greedy bastard...

"We thought Dion was a good alternative to Shearer..."

Eric.

I do hope they don't try and pretend that the resounding international success of the premier league wasn't 90% to do with United raising it's global profile.

Colin Hendry looked 105.

What I would have given to have just one season of Cantona and Shearer.

Probably would have been exactly what we saw - United winning a domestic league title but bombing out of the Champions League, given how both players flattered to deceive at the elite European level, and how Fergie wasn’t smart enough tactically whenever he came up against the continent’s best sides through the mid-90s.

It wasn’t anything to do with them being smart enough in the 90’s. We were emerging from effectively a pub league compared to the rest of Europe who had seven years on us playing the way they did in Europe the way they generally played every week in their own leagues.

Then when the lure of the premier league attracted the best of Europe’s players we couldn’t play them due to the foreigner rule. Had we have been able to play our strongest teams from 94-97 we’d have done much better than we did and the addition of Shearer would have made us done even better.

Not saying we’d have won it either, we’d have to be ridiculously arrogant to think we’d just turn up to a competition as strong as it was at the time and start proclaiming we were the best. However, I’m pretty certain a team that didn’t have May at right back and Gary Walsh in nets would have faired slightly better against Brondby.

2000-2005 was a slightly different story. I’ve no idea how we managed to £#%&! them years up so badly.

97 v Dortmund - we win that with Shearer
98 v Monaco - same

Would we have gone on to win the thing? Why not? Shearer would have been amazing at United. Let’s not pretend otherwise

Definitely would've got to 97 & 98 Finals if we had Shearer up front.

Loved Cole, still do but Shearer was another level, up there with Batistuta and Ronaldo in that period.
Keane AND Shearer in the same team would've been a cheat code tbh.

100%

He will regret not joining us too but won't ever admit it.

Whatever anyone's opinion is of Shearer, we'd have hammered Monaco and Dortmund if he'd have been at United. Absolutely sickening games. So many times we hit the post or just couldn't score to save our lives when we were all over them. We were better in both ties, easily.

Shearer still trying to justify his choice “what impressed me most about Blackburn is that they said they wanted to win the league”

Loved Colin Hendry in Afterlife

You can imagine Ferguson said to Shearer "Well, we're just happy to be IN this league. Think on, Alan." Hope he's happy when he looks at his bulging trophy cabinet, filled with goal of the month statues and MOTM bottles of Champagne.

Really enjoyed it.
Who was the old @#%&! at the beginning? 'the league has been like this since 1752' or whatever,
looked like George Whitebread.

The cheerleaders before the live games...

Not one of them was in time with each other and the giant sumo, inflatable sumo wrestlers. The game has definitely moved on...

Next one is all about us too by the looks of it.

(And a bit about Blackburn...)
