We were convinced he was coming to us and he had meetings with Ferie. It was all on. Then Jack Walker announced his “over my dead body” stance and it was all over. Shearer suddenly declared his undying love for newcastle.

Very much doubt he’d have earned more there than OT

Riccers got this

You mean the Alan Shearer from Newcastle? He certainly went to Blackburn for the money but I believe deep down he went to Newcastle for a combination of him being a fan, the money and the possibility of winning a league there.

There probably was a degree of that… after Walker stepped in. Remote poss of a title at Newcastle vs certainty with United? Probably would’ve earned more at OT, esp w/bonuses

Not saying he went there for the money, btw. He went because they were the next best option

At the time Newcastle we’re a good side. It was assumed that him going there scoring 30+ a season would get them the title.

Then Kevin saw his arse, left and they brought Kenny in who dismantled the side.

He’s said that he doesn’t regret choosing Newcastle over us but there must be times when the thinks about what he would have won (and the additional trophies he’d have got us).

We’d have had at least 6 good seasons out of him.

He’s got to say that. We’d have won the European cup in 97 with him IMHO.

Then again he’s shown signs of being a stubborn #@&%! so there’s maybe a chance he does firmly believe it.

We forget, it was a different era. No 'super agents', had anyone heard of an agent until Paul Stretford came along? whilst obviously players had some power if they decided to flex their muscles, the balance of power has now shifted, you didn't really get (or at least hear about) players / agents acting the dick like you do now.

Just watched it… Gillespie’s gambling. Millions.

Like Merson said… “you can only drink so many beers, put so much coke up your nose but with gambling you can lose it all”

Think Eric Hall was the first one I remember becoming 'famous', think he was Dennis Wise's agent amongst others

Was in the late 90s that we had van Hooijdonk (sp?) effectively going on strike because he wanted to leave Forest - then it was seen as almost totally unpredecented. Not so much these days.
