Juan Mata is 'optimistic' about his chances of a first Premier League start in nearly two months at the weekend.

Manchester United entertain Tottenham on Sunday, as they attempt to recover from their FA Cup elimination without the suspended Angel di Maria.

Di Maria's absence could work to Mata's advantage, however the Spaniard has not started a League match since he was hauled off at half-time in the win at Queens Park Rangers on January 17.

Mata has been linked with a move back to Spain, but in a cheerful Facebook Q&A he admitted he was still hopeful of returning to the United line-up.

"I'm working in the same way I have always done, with the same attitude and the same passion," Mata said on his Facebook page.

"That's all I can do.

"I'm always optimistic and ready to contribute to the team at any time!"

Early on Friday, Paul Scholes suggested Mata should be used by Louis van Gaal in The Reds' current system.

"There must be concerns for Juan Mata, who has not started a league game since the Queen’s Park Rangers match on 17 January," Scholes said.

"Given the system Van Gaal seeks to use, I wonder why Mata does not play instead of Fellaini, especially given that United can be reluctant to knock the ball long."

Mata added that although United will end the season the trophyless the squad is determined to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.

"Manchester United must always play in the Champions League, and we believe we'll make it!" he added.

His first start in over 2 months.

Amazing he has such a good scoring rate being treated like this in a weak team.

You're going to need to be more specific.
