Default The Athletic

Subscription based sports journo site comes to the UK, with a focus on football to begin with. Their model long form writing and to cover all teams as local papers would, starving the same papers of any talent:

“We will wait every local paper out and let them continuously bleed until we are the last ones standing,” the NY Times quoted Alex Mather, The Athletic’s chief executive, as saying at the time.

“We will suck them dry of their best talent at every moment. We will make business extremely difficult for them.”

Think they may have missed the boat on that one tbf but they've managed to poach Daniel Taylor who is one of the best out there as well as Mitten and this lot

£3 a month for first year isn't bad though they'll need to sell advertising space by y2 as no-one in their right mind will pay a tenner a month for sports content.

Journalism is on its arse. It’s full of clickbait and btec journalists that cite a story from another source. Already seen the Athletic being cited by the guardian alone with every other ‘united news’ account on twitter.

Seems like they have a few insiders that have gotten in on the Maguire story along with a few others. This summers transfer stories have been ran by Italian journalists that are more we’ll known on twitter.

Looking forward to yet another article from Mitten about how he’s flown to Kuala Lumpur to sit down for a chat with Quinton Fortune or something.
