Looks a shadow of the player he was last season as does The Big Dog.

Very worrying tbh.

I think he will be alright in another couple of games. When I watched MOTD there seemed to be no cohesion between him and lindelof. Martinez needs to step up as the leader of that defence when Varane is not there.

Makes sense why he’s looked more tentative on the pitch since the injury; he never actually recovered

Maguire must be loving it. “I’m back, lads. Give me that armband”

Varane is and always was the most important one to keep fit. Should be fine so long as its him & another.

Varane can't play 3 games in a row without having a month off in between ffs.

Yes, his time needs to be managed carefully. To be fair he was very regular last season, that short spell before the World Cup and the period in April/early May aside. Wasn't a coincidence we only lost 3 league games where he played 90 minutes last season (away at Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle .. tough games), and his return picked the side up to make top 4 when we'd dropped points in 3 of the 4 previous games when he'd been out ..

Shouldn't be played in either of the domestic cup competitions imo ..

A stable defence (and midfield) relies on a consistent centre-back pairing.

This is a huge blow if Martinez is out for 2-3 months.

The luck we're having with injuries is ridiculous.

CB has been our downfall for years now. Shaw's our best and he's not a proper CB. The dwarf is our best other option. Lindalof is shit, Maguire is shit, Varane's semi-retired.

Never winning the league until we get world class CB's.

Scored same number of goals as Brentford in 9th, 7 more than Leicester who got relegated .. kept 17 clean sheets, 3rd lowest conceded .. defence as the downfall does not compute ..

Issue categorically has been scoring goals, not conceding (bottom 5% in goals scored amongst top 4 sides over past 20 years, that is a pitiful figure ..). Defence generally has been a boon under ETH (hence keeping a clean sheet every-other-game last season ..), but he needs to figure out how to set up against the other top 4/5 sides as those outlier away results are crippling (remarkably still conceded same as Arsenal who were firmly in title race despite that) ..

Conceded 43 goals last season, of which 18 came in 4 games .. defence in the other 34 was title winning form ..

I think it’s been fairly obvious that he’s not been right since he came back.

Hes looked slow to turn and tentative.
