Default Manchester United 2-1 Wolves

Two goals from Park Ji-sung salvaged three points for Manchester United and condemned Wolves to a defeat they did not deserve.

With less than a minute remaining, the South Korean, who had opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time sprinted into the area and drove his shot into the corner of the Stretford End net. The Wolves manager, Mick McCarthy, who had been beaten here in the last minute of a Carling Cup tie less than a fortnight ago, swore and kicked the ground. This may have been a dreadful, disjointed performance by Manchester United but their habit of scoring late is still alive.

To general surprise Sir Alex Ferguson chose to give Owen Hargreaves his first start for more than two years. Sadly, the midfielder, playing in front of the England manager Fabio Capello, lasted a mere five minutes before appearing to pull a hamstring as he attempted a cross.

Having beaten Manchester City at Molineux, Wolves coped well with a disjointed United performance until a wonderfully judged pass from Darren Fletcher found Park unmarked in the area and the midfielder's finish proved worthy of the pass.

Twenty minutes into a second half in which United seemed to have contained them, McCarthy made a double substitution and was rewarded when Nenad Milijas's shot, delivered from the edge of the area, struck Sylvan Ebanks-Blake who had been on less than a minute. The striker reacted quickly, turned his marker, Nemanja Vidic, and shot between Edwin van der Sar's legs.
