wellin' up here la...

agree though. the players that liverpool need to make a title challenge are the players that won't go there because it'll mean a season without champions' league football. in which case, as you say, they'll end up over-reliant on suarez which will leave them short of ideas if he picks up an injury, is off-form or gets sussed.

credit to dalglish, he's got them a long way on bravado this season and if he can keep that going they'll go a long way again, with a prime opportunity to trouble the top four. however, the problem there is that it only centralises the question of their mentality. the scousers are almost trapped in a manic cycle; they thrive off euphoria but with all the fragility that it entails, so one knock can throw them off balance by raising the same old questions about their shortcomings. there's no irrepressible undercurrent of confidence, there's just waves of bluster and despair.

so dalglish has to build that confidence. he's got his feet under the table now; he's no longer operating on an interim basis and has to shape the squad for the long-term, which is a far greater challenge than the one he's faced so far - with the weight of expectation comes pressures and pitfalls that were largely cast aside in the wake of their nadir earlier this season. the question of whether he's still equipped to manage in the current era hasn't been answered by what he's achieved so far - it has become even more pertinent due to the situation in which they now find themselves.

Liverpool are 12/1 to win the league next season.

For those of you that don't understand betting odds, it means that if you put £10 on, You will lose £10.

what they need is some kind of stability so they can start building a structure in the squad and club. once that's in place they'll be able to build on it adding a bit of quality/youth/character/whatever each year. they've got players that they could build a squad around - hart, kompany, richards, de jong, silva, tevez - but they're too thick to realise that so they'll probably carry on with daft buys of over-expensive players that they don't need who will disrupt the squad instead of improving it.

they'd have done better to keep bellamy and sturridge and not get balotelli or dzeko imo. but they're citeh, even with all the money in the world they're still a laughing stock.
