SpinLaunch is a company trying to make a catapult powerful enough to launch payloads into space

It isn't there yet, but this is how it's going (seen from the POV of the payload)

I would have thought this technology (if it's proven to work) would allow a lot more nations to put satellites into orbit. Which may not be a good thing.

Was trying to work out how they generate enough power to get into space. Turns out it still uses a rocket engine but it's ignited at 60000ft as opposed to on the ground. Can reduce the need for power by a factor of 20. Impressive stuff. Assume it's quite limited in what you can send up due to that massive centrifuge that would destroy a lot of stuff.
