I suppose it's how you define the basic competencies at the level you're playing at (e.g. a champions League tie) or want to be at.
The majority of our players struggle receiving the ball under pressure, struggle to make any kind of accurate incisive pass, are one footed and can't go past a player.
For me, being able to control an easy pass and pass the ball sideways and backwards 5 yards isn't a basic requirement of a Man United player but it seems to have become the upper limit of the ability of most when we come up against decent opposition or press.
