"Those watching on French television on Tuesday night were treated to a pre-game montage of clips showing Ashley Young out of position, being beaten at the back post, or simply booting the ball out of play. The message was clear: The 33-year-old converted winger was there to be exploited. "

The Valencia/ Young, Mata/Lingard years.

Basically decided to play without a right hand side for the last 5/6 years.

Haven't had an actual right fullback or an actual right winger/ forward never mind top class ones for so long.

Mata slower than a snail that has Glandular fever and Lingard just laying the ball off safe and then floating off somewhere.

For FIVE fucking years.

It's a clear and obvious weakness.

He does as well as I'd except any ageing winger in that position. It's testament to his professionalism that he's made himself useful there...

... but that shouldn't distract from how ridiculous it is that we haven't had an actual right back playing right for what seems like about ten years.
